A soft bag arrives, you open the box, and it is flat. The top edge has a crease in it and one corner is folded in. Nothing is broken. This is normal, it is fixable in about a day, and it is worth knowing why it happens before you decide the bag is bad.
Why it ships flat
Unstructured bags ship compressed on purpose. A soft bag shipped in its natural shape needs a box several times the size, and a bigger box costs more, takes more space on a plane, and is more likely to get crushed anyway because it is mostly air.
So the bag gets folded, bagged and shipped flat. Then it sits under other parcels for a couple of weeks. Whatever shape it was folded into is the shape it arrives in.
This is not a sign of a cheap bag. Soft bags from every price bracket ship the same way. The expensive ones just arrive with more tissue stuffed inside them.
What normal looks like
A crease across the front panel. The top edge bent over. One or both bottom corners pushed in. Slight waviness along the zipper line.
All of that settles. It is the material remembering a fold, not the material failing.
What is not normal
A crack in the surface coating along the fold, where you can see a different color underneath. Hardware bent out of line. Stitching pulled open. A permanent shiny mark where something pressed hard against the surface.
Those do not settle, and they are damage rather than packing. If you see any of them, photograph it and email support within your return window. On our bags that is 30 days from delivery, and a damaged item is not something you pay return postage on.
The fix, which takes a day
Take everything out and unfold it fully.
Stuff it firmly, but not tight, with something soft. Tissue paper, a rolled t-shirt, a small towel, or the plastic insert it came with if there was one. You want the bag pushed out to its full shape, not stretched past it.
Close the zipper, so the top edge holds its own line while the rest recovers.
Leave it somewhere warm and dry, out of direct sun, for 24 hours. Warmth speeds this up. Direct sun does not, it just ages the coating.
Unstuff and check. Most creases are gone or nearly gone. A stubborn one usually goes with a second day.
What not to do
No iron, at any temperature, with or without a cloth. PU is a plastic coating and it melts and goes shiny long before it goes flat.
No hair dryer held close, same reason. If you use one at all, it is on cool, moving constantly, from a foot away, and honestly it is not worth it.
Do not stuff it so hard the seams strain. You are restoring a shape, not inflating a balloon. Overstuffing a light bag stretches the seams and that does not come back.
Do not put anything wet inside it.
Keeping the shape after that
Store it lightly stuffed, standing or lying flat, not hanging from the strap. A loaded bag hanging by a thin strap for months stretches the strap and puts a permanent bend at the attachment point.
Do not stack other bags on top of a soft one. That is how a bag that survived shipping gets creased in your own closet.
Keep it off radiators, dashboards and windowsills. Heat plus a fold is what turns a temporary crease into a permanent one.
