How to Wear a Crossbody Bag: Three Positions, One Strap

A crossbody bag is one bag that wears three ways, and most people only ever use one of them. The difference is strap length, and it takes about fifteen seconds to change.

The three positions

Crossbody, hip height. Strap over one shoulder and across the body, bag landing at the top of the opposite hip. This is the hands-free position. It is stable when you walk, it is hard to grab, and it is the reason the style exists.

Crossbody, high and short. Same wear, shorter strap, bag sitting at the bottom of the ribcage. It reads more deliberate and less practical, and it keeps the bag in your eyeline in a crowd. This is the position most editorial photos use.

Shoulder. Strap doubled or fully lengthened, bag hanging under the arm. Easiest to open and close, easiest to take off, worst for actually walking anywhere, because it slides.

Getting the length right

For hip-height crossbody, the bag should sit where your hand naturally falls when your arm is relaxed. Most people set the strap too long the first time, which puts the bag past the hip and makes it swing into things.

Adjust it while wearing the outfit you will actually wear, not over a t-shirt. A coat adds real bulk across the chest and shortens the effective length, sometimes by two inches.

For shoulder wear, the bag should tuck under the arm with the top of the bag roughly at your waist. Longer than that and it hits your hip while you walk. Shorter and you cannot get your arm over the strap.

Which side

Put the bag on the side of your non-dominant hand. Your dominant hand stays free, and opening the bag with the dominant hand across your body is more natural than the reverse.

If you carry a coat or a drink, the bag goes on the opposite side from whichever hand is holding it.

Strap over or under a coat

Over the coat is more secure and easier to reach. Under the coat is warmer and hides the strap, but you have to unzip the coat to open the bag, which is genuinely annoying in a queue.

For a going-out bag over a jacket, wear it over. For a bag you are carrying through cold weather with a long coat, under, and accept the tradeoff.

Detachable straps change the calculation

A strap that unclips at both ends is worth more than it sounds. It means one bag covers a night where you want it hands-free walking there and a clutch once you are inside.

It also means a broken strap does not kill the bag, and it means you can swap in a wider or a different-colored strap later. Our pearl quilted crossbody unclips at both ends and adjusts with a buckle, which is the setup we look for on any bag we bring in.

Wearing a decorated bag without it wearing you

Bags with pearls, crystals or heavy hardware are the loudest thing in most outfits. Two ways to handle that.

Let it be the point: plain outfit, simple colors, the bag as the one decorated object. This is the easier of the two and it almost always works.

Or match the metal to the rest of your hardware. If your jewelry is gold and the bag's buckle is silver, the two fight in photos even when they look fine in a mirror. It is a small thing that separates an outfit that photographs well from one that does not.

Where the decoration sits

On a decorated bag, check where the detail lands in each position. Pearls set near the top of the bag stay visible in crossbody wear. Detail on the lower front panel disappears against your hip.

Worth thirty seconds in a mirror before you leave, because a bag whose best feature is hidden by your arm all night is doing nothing for you.

Two habits that keep it looking new

Take it off before you sit down and put it on your lap or the back of the chair. Bags that stay on your body while seated get crushed against chair arms, and that is where decorated fronts lose stones.

Do not hang it on the shoulder strap on a hook for storage. Hanging a loaded bag by a thin strap stretches the strap and stresses the clips. Lay it flat, lightly stuffed, on a shelf.

If you want a place to start: set it hip height, non-dominant side, strap over the coat. Adjust from there once you have worn it out once.
